Pilates FAQs
What is Pilates?
Pilates is a philosophy of movement developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th Century. It restores balance to the body and conditions and strengthens the underlying musculature (especially the deep muscles of the abdomen and spine) while enhancing flexibility through stretching and breath.
What is your approach to Pilates?
My approach to Pilates is primarily classical, while also incorporating a client-centered perspective. The original system of traditional exercises, exercise order, and methods developed by Joseph Pilates is a tried-and-true foundation that can help to build a strong physical discipline. I honor this system, but also recognize that each client will be unique in terms of their abilities, goals, and limitations. By tailoring my instruction to meet your specific needs, I’ll help you achieve optimal results while minimizing the risk of injury.
What should I expect from my session?
Reps are LOW, so plan on making each movement count! The instructor will stand & direct the class with her voice, so as to watch the bodies and give corrections... this also allows you to focus on your body rather than on copying the instructor. Always ask for modifications if you feel any discomfort, & as with any form of exercise, do what you can, & take a break when you need to! Private Sessions are one-on-one sessions custom designed according to your specific body needs and goals. Sessions will integrate the full collection of Pilates equipment are available to us (may include: Reformer, Chair, Cadillac, and Barrels) for an intense & personalized Pilates experience. Duet Sessions are similar to the Private Sessions, but with the added companionship and motivation of a friend! You’ll still receive plenty of personalized attention. Depending on the studio space, clients may work in “circuit” style so that more types of equipment can be utilized. Reformer/Mat Classes are small group classes that will primarily utilize the most classic piece of Pilates equipment - the Reformer, but will also integrate some of the Classical Mat work.
How should I prepare for my session?
Please bring a water bottle & wear comfortable clothing. Socks & shoes are not required. Please wear somewhat form fitting clothing. Baggy clothing is discouraged, as I want to SEE how your muscles engage! Also, in some positions baggy clothing can be “revealing” (especially shorts, boys)!!! Finally, class will incorporate a lot of CORE work, so please make sure you have fully digested your last meal!
How does Pilates differ from Yoga?
It is not easy to compare Pilates & Yoga - they are both huge subjects with many differences and similarities. One way to look at it is that Pilates exercises are directed more towards developing Core Strength and efficient movement habits that translate into daily life. Yoga emphasizes more stretch and flexibility, and on expanding consciousness through movement. (I’m happy to discuss further!)
What Are The Benefit Of Pilates?
*Healthy Spine *Longer, Leaner Muscles *Increased Flexibility & Strength *Better Balance & Coordination *Increased Mind-Body Connection *Strong & Stable CORE/Center *Improved Posture *Uniformly Developed Body *Increased Range of Motion *Improved Bone Density & Joint Health *Reduced Back/Neck/Joint Pain *Increased Body Awareness.... and the list goes on!
When Will I See Results?
To quote Joseph Pilates himself, “In 10 sessions you will FEEL the difference, in 20 sessions you will SEE the difference, and in 30 you will have A NEW BODY” In the meantime during your first few sessions, expect to feel invigorated with a heightened awareness of your deep musculature post-class!
Is Pilates a Cardio Workout?
No...typically Pilates is practiced in a gentle & anaerobic way, although at advanced levels the Pilates system emphasizes flow and dynamic, choreographed transitions for a sweaty and heart-rate-elevating workout!
Is Pilates For Me?
Pilates is for everyone! The Pilates system challenges stronger bodies, rehabilitates injured bodies, and improves and develops strength in bodies that are not yet strong. No matter your age, strength or condition, Pilates is an intelligent, functional exercise for lifelong well-being.
